Fixing the Cracks, Crumbles, and Stains to Make Your Chimney Like New!

Does your masonry consist of cracks, stains, or crumbling and spalling brick or stone and mortar? Have you noticed water damage and stains on the ceiling or walls near your chimney? If this sounds like your home, you may have a leak somewhere within your chimney system.

What Causes Chimney Leaks?

There are a few main reasons why chimney leaks occur:

Chimney Cap Damage or Absence: When a cap is damaged or missing (typically as the result of animal tampering or a bad storm), environmental elements have direct access to your chimney and home.

Worn or Improperly Installed Crown: When a chimney crown is not the proper material or build, it can quickly deteriorate, and allow water to enter the chimney system.

Damaged, Deteriorating, or Missing Flashing: Without proper flashing, the masonry of the chimney is susceptible to water penetration and decay. Strong winds and animal tampering can cause the flashing to separate from the place of installation.

Holes or Cracks Within The Masonry: If water enters into the brick and mortar of the chimney and temperatures change rapidly, a process of freezing and thawing can cause breaks, cracks, and crumbling.

Why It’s Important to Fix

If left alone, leaks can cause great damage to your chimney. Some of the most common being:

Cracks, Breaks, and Holes in Masonry

Corroded Metal Liner

Cracks and Crumbling in a Clay Liner

Efflorescence (deposit of salts on brick)

Pinpointing a chimney leak can be difficult because there are several ways for water to enter the system. With Magic Broom, you can be confident that our technicians will pinpoint the leak source and quickly remedy the situation. Troubleshooting is one of our specialties!
